Laboratory of Molecular Pathology of bacterial toxins - Prof. Brigotti

Scientific activity

The research is focused on a group of bacterial toxins, known as Shiga toxins (Stx1, Stx2), produced by pathogenic Escherichia coli strains (Stx-producing E. coli; STEC). Stxs have an important role in the pathogenesis of human diseaseas such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The latter is the leading cause of acute renal failure in children (< 3 years) and is also characterized by thrombocytopenia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and experimental therapy of HUS are studied by our group.
