Phospholipase C-Beta1: a new potential prognostic biomarker in high- and low-grade gliomas.
Gliomas are a heterogeneous group of tumours originating from the neuroglial cells of the Central Nervous System.
They can be classified into low- and high-grade gliomas, and the latter include Glioblastoma, which is the most common and aggressive brain tumour in adults.
The main therapies for these tumours are based on neurosurgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which are often highly invasive procedures and cannot cure patients definitively.
For this reason, the field of gliomas represents a global challenge, and understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in tumour transformation, together with clinical analysis of patients, may lead the way to new targeted therapeutic strategies.
Several recent studies have demonstrated the key role of phospholipases (PLCs), and in particular PLC1, in pathogenesis.
