Oxymax-CLAMS (Columbus Instruments)

The Oxymax-CLAMS is a system for monitoring rodents’ metabolism, activity, and food/water intake. It enables precise, multi-parameter studies of energy balance, behavior, and metabolic disorders.

The Oxymax-CLAMS system enables comprehensive studies of energy metabolism, feeding behavior, and activity under controlled conditions.

As a multi-parameter monitoring system for laboratory animals, it integrates indirect calorimetry (open-circuit) to measure oxygen consumption (VO₂) and carbon dioxide production (VCO₂), from which energy expenditure and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) are derived. It also tracks locomotor activity, food and water intake, and optional parameters such as body temperature.

The main applications are realted to:

  • Energy metabolism, linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
  • Research on exercise, food consumption and restriction, or thermogenic responses.
