The founding congress of SINISTRA ITALIANA held in Rimini on 15th February 2017 elected Nicola Fratoianni party secretary. However, the delegates arrived at the congress already divided between those in favour of working with and forming an alliance with the PD (Arturo Scotto component) and those like Fratoianni who wished to build an independent leftist party, not subordinate to the Democratic Party. Even before the start of the congress, friction between the two groups produced major tension, due to Scotto's refusal to stand for party secretary. During the congress the research unit collected 261 interviews of national delegates elected from among the 700 attendees.
