CoastPredict General Assembly Day 2 Report

Focus on observing systems, citizen science, and integrated approaches for coastal resilience

  • Date: 22 APRIL 2026  from 9:00 to 17:00

  • Type: Conference

The second day of the CoastPredict & GlobalCoast Network Assemblies, co-organised with the Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR) and hosted by Cinvestav Mexico, took place on 22 April 2026 in Mérida, further strengthening collaboration within the international coastal research and operational community.

The programme focused on advancing the design of observing systems and the role of citizen science in supporting coastal resilience. Presentations highlighted innovative technologies, cost-effective monitoring solutions, and community-driven approaches to data collection, underlining the importance of accessible and scalable observation strategies.

Contributions also explored oceanographic instrumentation, real-time monitoring systems, and the increasing role of ocean intelligence in informing decision-making processes.

The discussion then moved towards the integration of observations and predictions, with particular emphasis on digital twins, modelling systems, and forecasting tools. Case studies and pilot initiatives illustrated how these approaches can support impact assessment, hazard mitigation, and the development of operational services across different regional contexts.

In the afternoon, sessions addressed the Global Coastal Ocean Resilience framework, including co-design methodologies and socio-economic dimensions. These discussions reinforced the need for integrated and inclusive approaches that connect scientific knowledge with societal needs within the framework of the UN Ocean Decade.

The day concluded with forward-looking reflections on CoastPredict’s legacy and future collaborations, marking a further step towards coordinated global action for coastal resilience.
