The event offers a broad reflection on how Brexit has reshaped relations between the United Kingdom, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the European Union. Speakers will discuss the main political and social changes that have emerged in recent years, the renewed attention to the question of Irish unity, and the role the EU has played in supporting dialogue between the two islands. The event also considers what these developments might mean for future EU–UK relations.

Summary

To conclude the seventh edition, a final event was devoted to relations between the European Union, the United Kingdom and Ireland, five years after Brexit. 

The event, held on 9 December, brought together Giada Laganà (Cardiff University), Margherita Capannoli (University of Genoa) and Francesco Massardo (University of Genoa), who reflected on the ways in which Brexit has reshaped relations between the United Kingdom, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the European Union. The speakers examined the main political and social changes that have emerged in recent years, the renewed focus on the question of Irish unity, and the role played by the EU in supporting dialogue between the two islands. The discussion also included historical references to the significance of the European Parliament and to the informal networks developed among Members of the European Parliament in the 1970s, which—at the height of tensions between Ireland and the United Kingdom—contributed to easing relations between the two sides. This role of the European Parliament was then considered in light of the current context in order to assess the impact of Brexit.

A concludere la settima edizione, un evento dedicato ai rapporti tra l’Unione Europea, il Regno Unito e l’Irlanda a distanza di 5 anni dalla Brexit.

All’incontro, svoltosi il 9 dicembre, hanno partecipato Giada Laganà (Università di Cardiff), Margherita Capannoli (Università di Genova) e Francesco Massardo (Università di Genova) che hanno condotto una riflessione su come la Brexit abbia ridefinito i rapporti tra Regno Unito, Irlanda, Irlanda del Nord e Unione europea. I relatori hanno discusso i principali cambiamenti politici e sociali emersi negli ultimi anni, la rinnovata attenzione alla questione dell’unità irlandese e il ruolo svolto dall’UE nel sostenere il dialogo tra le due isole. Non sono mancati riferimenti storici all’importanza del Parlamento europeo e della formazione delle reti informali tra gli eurodeputati che, negli anni 70’, all’apice delle tensioni tra Irlanda e Regno Unito, hanno contribuito a riavvicinare i due antagonisti. L’interessante ruolo del Parlamento è stato messo in comparazione all’attualità per analizzare l’impatto della Brexit.
