The Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR) actively participated in the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3), held in Nice from 9 to 13 June 2025, contributing to the global dialogue on sustainable ocean action with a focus on coastal resilience.

Throughout the week, DCC-CR was represented by its Chief Scientific Officer, Prof. Vassiliki Kourafalou, who took part in a series of high-level engagements aimed at showcasing the role of transformative science in addressing coastal challenges.

The Centre’s participation began on 9 June aboard the RV Meteor, with a roundtable hosted by the German Marine Research Alliance on “Solution-driven Ocean Research.” The event gathered leading scientific voices to discuss how to turn scientific knowledge into actionable solutions for ocean sustainability.

On 11 June, DCC-CR joined the High-Level Blue Economy Networking and Knowledge Voyage and contributed to the Ocean Decade Forum – Ambition, Action, Impact, both hosted at the Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen. These events provided a platform for dialogue between science, policy, and practice, highlighting the importance of co-design and knowledge sharing within the Ocean Decade framework.

On 12 June, during a UNOC-3 Blue Zone side event aboard the Staatsrad Lehmkuhl vessel, Prof. Kourafalou presented the Centre’s achievements, focusing on its role as a facilitator of inclusive scientific cooperation and innovation to support coastal adaptation and resilience.

The DCC-CR’s presence at UNOC-3 concluded on 13 June with a contribution to the “Coastal Challenges” session at the European Digital Ocean Pavilion (INSPIRE area), organized in collaboration with CoastPredict and the CMCC Foundation. Dr. Giovanni Coppini presented cutting-edge work on coastal digital twin technologies, showcasing how advanced modelling can support policy and decision-making in the face of climate impacts.

The DCC-CR’s active role in UNOC-3 reflects its commitment to advancing science-based coastal solutions through international collaboration, supporting the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
