The publication A Cup of Coffee and the Ocean: The Basics of Ocean Dynamics has just been released by Dr. Sung Yong Kim. The booklet offers an accessible introduction to how the ocean moves, mixing scientific accuracy with a simple and engaging style. Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and serves as Chair of the Technical Committee on Monitoring (MONITOR) at the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES).
PICES co-leads the endorsed Decade Programme SMARTNET – Sustainability of Marine Ecosystems through Global Knowledge Networks, which is an affiliated action of the DCC-CR. SMARTNET promotes collaboration across international networks to share knowledge and support the sustainable management of marine ecosystems. By producing resources like this publication, the initiative helps expand understanding of the ocean among both experts and the wider public.
A Cup of Coffee and the Ocean highlights the importance of making ocean science approachable to diverse audiences, encouraging a stronger connection between people and the sea. This aligns with the DCC-CR’s mission to strengthen coastal resilience by promoting scientific knowledge, interdisciplinary dialogue, and effective communication tools.
