On 4–5 November 2025 the international symposium “Coastal Resilience: Mitigating Threats for Healthy Oceans”, organised by the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) on the Balearic Islands, brought together leading researchers and practitioners to address multidisciplinary challenges at the land–sea interface.

Prof. Nadia Pinardi, Director of our Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience (DCCCR), delivered a keynote presentation entitled “Coasts at Risk: Building Stronger, Safer Communities in the UN Ocean Decade”. Her remarks highlighted the Centre’s core themes: operational oceanography, nature-based solutions, community resilience and knowledge co-production in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The symposium sessions covered topics including physical and biological coastal protection, human pressures on coastal environments (such as renewable energy development, pollution and demographic change), as well as the provision of coastal services under climate variability and change. The event proved highly inspirational for the DCC-CR, reinforcing the value of interdisciplinary exchange as well as practical, solution-oriented action in support of resilient coastal systems.

DCC-CR welcomes the opportunity to build upon the ideas and networks emerging from this symposium and looks forward to further collaboration with IMEDEA and the wider research and stakeholder community.
