Today’s theme at ECOMONDO emphasized the vital role of science and data in building coastal resilience.
Throughout the day, experts from diverse fields—data collection, modeling, and applied science—came together to discuss transboundary challenges and the power of global scientific collaboration. The discussions underscored the importance of research that goes beyond national borders, includes innovative approaches like citizen science, and leverages tools such as sensors and Early Warning Systems to build better-prepared coastal communities.
In line with our motto, Better Informed, Better Prepared, we had the pleasure of hosting the CMCC’s autonomous surface vehicle, EchoBoat, at our stand. This advanced vehicle is equipped with specialized sonar technology that allows it to characterize and map underwater habitats, providing essential data on seabed types and submerged vegetation. Such detailed insights are crucial for understanding ecosystem health and planning effective coastal resilience measures, demonstrating the practical impact of scientific tools in preparing communities for future challenges.
Speakers also highlighted the role of our Decade Collaborative Center (DCC-CR) not only in advancing scientific research but in fostering collaboration with civil protection agencies and engaging the broader public. By combining scientific resources with educational initiatives, we aim to make coastal resilience a shared objective for all—bringing science closer to communities that need to be ready for evolving environmental risks.
This focus on real-world impact and multidisciplinary approaches reinforces our commitment to guiding students and researchers toward solving tangible problems, helping them understand the diverse responsibilities that coastal resilience demands.
Looking ahead: Tomorrow, Day 3, will be dedicated to Education and Capacity Enhancement for Coastal Resilience. Join us in person at the Pavilion B8, Stand 213 of the fair or online for another day of insightful discussions!
