The DCC-CR Partner Alliance Network, a strategic collaboration between the Decade Collaborative Center for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR), the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), and Deltares, has been officially ratified during the Program Committee Meeting on February 3, 2025, in Lecce. This milestone follows the initial approval of the partnership by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in December 2024.

This new alliance enhances cooperation between three leading institutions in climate science, coastal modeling, and resilience strategies. It brings together complementary expertise to address the growing challenges posed by climate change to coastal environments worldwide.

A Powerful Synergy for Coastal Resilience

The partnership is designed to foster an interdisciplinary, science-driven approach. It will leverage advanced research, data assimilation, and predictive modeling to support sustainable coastal development and risk mitigation.

Nadia Pinardi, Director of CMCC, underlined the importance of this collaboration:

"This partnership enables us to integrate our climate modeling capabilities with Deltares' applied research, enhancing our collective impact on coastal sustainability."

Giovanni Coppini, Director of CMCC’s Strategic Program on Global Coasts as the New Frontier, highlighted the potential of this alliance:

"By joining forces, we can develop more robust strategies to address the challenges facing our global coastlines, ensuring a sustainable future for these vital regions."

Ghada El Serafy, Specialist in Data Assimilation, Data Sciences, and Applied Informatics at Deltares, emphasized the role of data-driven innovation in this partnership:

"Collaborating with CMCC allows us to apply advanced data assimilation techniques to climate models, improving the accuracy and applicability of our research outcomes."

New Strategic Workplan and Action Plan

In light of this strengthened collaboration, the DCC-CR Strategic Workplan and Action Plan were updated and officially approved during the Program Committee Meeting in Lecce. These documents outline the joint vision, priorities, and concrete steps to guide the partnership’s activities in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

The DCC-CR Partnership Alliance Network marks a significant step forward in the global effort to develop innovative, science-based solutions for coastal resilience. By combining research excellence, operational expertise, and knowledge-sharing, this partnership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of coastal adaptation and risk reduction strategies.
