On October 24, the Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience, in collaboration with the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna, is pleased to host a seminar by Professor William Young from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego.

Title: Long-range propagation of ocean swell

Abstract:
About sixty years ago, Munk and Snodgrass showed that low-frequency surface gravity waves (swell) propagate from sources in the Southern Ocean to Californian beaches. However, the apparent location of some sources on Antarctica can only be mirages. Using modern data, Professor Young will discuss the hypothesis that these mirages result from the refraction of swell by surface currents.
