Coastal Resilience Webinar Series: "Decadal slowdown of mean sea level rise in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: the role of the water budget (1993–2022)" by Federica Borile

Join Federica Borile in our upcoming webinar as she presents new insights into long-term sea level variability in the Eastern Mediterranean and explores the physical processes driving recent trends.

  • Date: 21 MAY 2025  from 14:00 to 15:00

  • Event location: Online event

  • Type: Webinars

We are pleased to announce the next session of the Coastal Resilience webinar series, organized jointly with our alliance partners Deltares and CMCC.

The May 21 webinar will feature Federica Borile, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bologna, where she contributes to the development of a new reanalysis of the Mediterranean Sea spanning the last 45 years. Her work focuses on improving ocean modeling and enhancing the simulation of key processes such as water mass formation, mesoscale dynamics, and decadal sea level trends.

Abstract

The presented study investigates decadal mean sea level variability in the Mediterranean Sea (1993–2022) using satellite altimetry, tide gauges, and reanalyses. Results show an Eastern Mediterranean sea level trend slowdown mainly driven by increased evaporation, highlighting the need for continued monitoring to improve projections and inform effective adaptation strategies.

Speaker's Bio

Federica Borile is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bologna. With a background in physics and a PhD conducted in collaboration with CMCC, her research focuses on ocean circulation, tides, and the development of a 45-year Mediterranean Sea reanalysis to improve the simulation of key physical processes and sea level trends.
