On 20 June 2025, the Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR) proudly celebrated a significant milestone in international scientific cooperation: the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the University of Bologna’s Department of Physics and Astronomy (DIFA) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in China. The agreement was signed during the official visit of a high-level delegation from Guangdong Province, led by Vice Governor Mr. Zhang Shaokang.

This crucial step was made possible thanks to the solid relationship that has been established over time between our Centre and the South China Sea Decade Collaborative Centre. The DCC-CR played a key role in enabling this partnership, which paves the way for joint research activities and academic exchange programmes in multiple fields related to coastal resilience.
The day offered a valuable opportunity for institutional exchange and scientific insight. After an official welcome at the Emilia-Romagna Region headquarters, the delegation visited the Bologna Technopole, where they received presentations on the regional High Technology Network, the Leonardo supercomputer at CINECA, and a guided tour of the ECMWF data center. These engagements fostered mutual understanding of the region’s advanced research infrastructure and innovation ecosystem.
The scientific discussion involved senior representatives from the University of Bologna, the Emilia-Romagna Region, CINECA, ECMWF (the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), and CMCC (the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change), focusing on shared strategies and research priorities to enhance coastal resilience through collaborative, transdisciplinary approaches.
The formal signing of the MoA concluded a day marked by strategic alignment, a shared vision for ocean sustainability, and renewed commitment to advancing international cooperation under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
Such activities represent a concrete implementation of the DCC-CR’s core mission: strengthening the connection between new science and technology developed in the Ocean Decade and coastal stakeholders, through the adoption of innovative co-design practices for coastal resilience.
