During the DCC-CR and CoastPredict Events in Lecce (February 3-7), our Director Nadia Pinardi joined Rai Radio3 Scienza to discuss the unique nature of coastal environments—dynamic interfaces between land and sea that have only recently become the focus of scientific research. She highlighted the importance of integrating observational data with predictive models to address the challenges of coastal resilience.
In the interview, we also hear insights from Lorna Inniss, expert in integrated coastal zone management and Executive Secretary of UNESCO-IOC for the Caribbean; Aletta T. Yñiguez, marine biology professor at the University of the Philippines' Marine Science Institute; and Bipendra Prakash, coordinator of the Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS) and member of the Pacific Community Secretariat for the Fiji Islands.
The Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience and CoastPredict are at the forefront of developing digital twins of the ocean—integrated predictive models enhanced with real-time observational data—to improve coastal resilience in the face of climate change. The discussion also explores how global coastal regions are coping with these environmental shifts.
