More than one third of the global population lives in the coastal regions and relies on marine resources and industries for their living and livelihood. Oceans and coastal seas contribute to food security, job creation and trade, and act as an important source of minerals and energy through oil and gas resources and offshore ocean-based green energy production. These marine resources and the dependent communities are under severe threat due to both natural and anthropogenic pressures such as pollution, acidification, ocean related hazards and climate change. Ocean observations, ocean data, modelling and prediction systems, underpinned by capacity development and research, are central to the delivery of operational ocean services for blue economy stakeholders, enhancing coastal resilience and developing policy frameworks for sustainable management of the oceans.
