Event location: University of Bologna Geophysics Library, Viale Berti Pichat 8 - In presence and online event
Type: Webinars
On 17 July 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00, Guido Ascenso (CMCC Foundation) will present the seminar “Machine Learning for Cyclones – A Panoramic View of Applications and Challenges”.
The session will explore how machine learning (ML) is being increasingly applied to the study of cyclones and extreme weather events, tackling a variety of modeling challenges related to cyclone tracks, rainfall, wind patterns, and resulting damage.
Title: Machine Learning for Cyclones -- A Panoramic View of Applications and Challenges
Guido Ascenso, CMCC Foundation
Abstract:
Machine learning (ML) is increasingly being used to study extreme weather events, including cyclones. The various characteristics of cyclones (from their track, rainfall, and wind patterns, to the damages they cause) represent distinct modelling challenges. Therefore, a wide array of ML algorithms is needed to fully characterize these phenomena. This seminar offers a panoramic overview of research conducted at Politecnico di Milano, showcasing various ML algorithms applied to cyclone studies, spanning bias correction of cyclone rainfall reanalysis and forecasts, mapping of post-cyclone impacts on mangrove forests, seasonal cyclonic activity estimation, and synthetic generation of wind and pressure fields.
