Who we are Empowering Coastal Communities for a Resilient Future

Since 2022, the DCC-CR provides crucial support to the Ocean Decade Coordination Unit. Our mission? To facilitate and coordinate efforts dedicated to enhancing coastal resilience within the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development.

In the context of the Ocean Decade, our focus is on Challenge 6: Strengthening Community Resilience to Ocean Hazards. We will achieve this through various means, such as assisting endorsed Decade Actions, initiating new ones, engaging with stakeholders, communicating, raising awareness, mobilizing resources, and carefully monitoring and evaluating progress.

Coastal regions are fascinating areas where land meets the sea, encompassing the intertidal zones and parts of the continental shelf. They are dynamic, often densely populated, and play a significant role in human, economic, and natural systems. However, they face a range of challenges, including geological hazards, pollution, climate change, and rising sea levels.

Resilience is a term used to describe the ability of these coastal systems to recover after disturbances. An international community of experts in ocean resilience has been working intensely to raise awareness, share knowledge, and tackle the scientific questions related to coastal resilience.

The DCC-CR aims to catalyse this expertise, create connections between science and communities, and work to promote the creation of new knowledge and understanding of coastal processes and adaptation pathways.

The main mission of the DCC-CR is to strengthen the connection between new science and technology developed in the Ocean Decade and coastal stakeholders, implementing innovative co-design practices for coastal resilience.

To do so, we have identified four pillars to guide our actions by the end of the Ocean Decade.
