Digital presentism : questions for memory and AI

Abstract

Digital technology is now widely used for documents and archives. However, using this technology changes the relationship to the past that these contents can establish. Indeed, the flavour of archives emanating from parchments, old films and old videos is being replaced by a presentism of containers (we only look at digital files) and contents (images, texts, sounds, etc.) that have been brought up to date (particularly through AI). Digital technology imposes an eternal present, offering a past that never ends and a future that is always already available. It is the economy of memory that is thus transformed.
