"Ereditare Eco. Umberto Eco, l’Università di Bologna e tutti i saperi del mondo"

Nel 2026 saranno trascorsi 10 anni dalla morte di Umberto Eco, avvenuta il 19 febbraio 2016. 

Dieci anni in cui Eco aveva chiesto di non organizzare convegni su di lui, al fine di individuare e apprezzare meglio cosa dimenticare e cosa conservare, e su cui poter costruire.

Un decennio, in effetti, costituisce un arco di tempo adeguato per consentire alla Cultura di realizzare due delle sue funzioni essenziali, che Eco ha tematizzato e reso centrali nei suoi saggi: un’operazione di filtraggio del sapere, che consegna alle generazioni successive solo quanto merita memoria nel tempo, e un’operazione di apertura, che rinnova attraverso percorsi interpretativi inediti il dettato di un testo. Due gesti che, soli, permettono di apprezzare quello che può e deve restare.

Il convegno dei 10 anni dalla morte di Eco, che l’Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, attraverso il suo Centro internazionale di Studi umanistici “Umberto Eco” promuove, vuole rendere visibile il lascito intellettuale di Umberto Eco, invitando i partecipanti a dare forma al convegno, nell’ambizione di realizzare un evento scientifico genuinamente vicino al pensiero di Umberto Eco.

Chiamando a raccolta gli studiosi nei molteplici ambiti di sapere in cui Eco si è esercitato, il convegno si propone di fare emergere cosa del pensiero di Eco resti come sua eredità, cosa il lavorio e la distanza di questi dieci anni abbiano selezionato, cosa ancora sia meritevole di attenzione e in quali direzioni la riflessione possa aprirsi e venire rilanciata. Un convegno, dunque, che non indica a priori temi e sotto-temi su cui riflettere, ma che chiede che i temi prioritari emergano dalle relazioni, dal dibattito e dal lavoro vivo degli studiosi chiamati a raccolta a Bologna.

Il Centro Internazionale di Studi umanistici “Umberto Eco” configura così un convegno-opera aperta su cui si possano innestare nuove piste di riflessione riattraversando e ri-flitrando l’immensa opera di Umberto Eco.

 Per strutturare gli interventi, si forniscono sei ambiti in cui collocare le proprie proposte:

1. Narrativa
2. Interpretazione e Traduzione
3. Semiotica
4. Filosofia e Storia delle idee
5. Medioevo
6. Media

Su questi sfondi, coloro che si sono rispecchiati in una o più idee di Eco potranno intervenire e riflettere dialogicamente con la comunità degli studiosi.

Così facendo, non solo il convegno ridisegnerà un’eredità destinata a essere sempre più ricca e aperta, ma permetterà di commemorare in modo non protocollare il vasto lascito ideale di Eco, di mostrarne la forza, di rinnovarne la lettura, creando un’occasione non commemorativa o solo retrospettiva, ma carica di pensiero, di innovazione e di futuro.

Indicazione organizzative

Invitiamo i ricercatori che vogliono partecipare al convegno a mandare la propria proposta entro il 30 ottobre 2025.

La proposta dovrà specificare:

• Nome e Cognome
• Affiliazione
• Titolo
• Ambito di riferimento (fra i 6 indicati sopra)
• Abstract (compreso fra 2000 e 4000 caratteri con spazi inclusi)
• 5 parole chiave
• Breve nota biografica (1000 caratteri circa con spazi inclusi).

Il sito ufficiale del convegno, tramite il quale sarà possibile inviare le proposte, sarà disponibile dalla fine del mese di maggio 2025.

Il Comitato scientifico del convegno notificherà l’accettazione della proposta entro il 30 novembre 2025.

Le lingue previste per il convegno sono italiano e inglese. Anche la proposta, dunque, dovrà essere redatta in una di queste due lingue.

La durata massima delle relazioni è di 20 minuti.

Se la proposta verrà accettata, per poterla presentare sarà necessario il pagamento anticipato della quota di iscrizione.

• Early Rate: euro 180,00 (fino al 10 gennaio 2025)
• Standard Rate: euro 300,00 (dal 10 gennaio 2026 a fine convegno)
• Dottorandi (Phd student): euro 90,00.

L’iscrizione prevede l’accesso a tutte le conferenze magistrali e tutti gli eventi convegnistici e sociali che verranno organizzati durante il convegno.

Inheriting Eco. Umberto Eco, the University of Bologna and all the knowledge in the world

The year 2026 will mark the 10th anniversary of Umberto Eco's death on 19 February 2016.

Ten years during which Eco himself had asked not to organise any conferences about him, so as to better determine and appreciate what to forget, what to keep, and what to build on.

Indeed, a decade is an adequate time span to allow culture to fulfil two of its essential functions, adopted by Eco as central themes of his essays: that of filtering knowledge, offering subsequent generations only that which deserves to be remembered, and of opening, or renewing, a text through new interpretations. Two actions that, alone, serve to appreciate what can and must remain.

This conference on the 10th anniversary of Eco's death, which the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna is promoting through its Centro internazionale di Studi umanistici “Umberto Eco”, aims to make Umberto Eco's intellectual legacy visible, inviting participants to shape the conference with the ambition of developing a scientific event that is genuinely close to Umberto Eco's way of thinking.

By bringing together scholars in the many fields of knowledge in which Eco worked, the conference aims to bring out Eco's legacy of thought; the aspects that emerge following the progress and distance brought about by ten years; the elements of thought that are still worthy of attention; and the directions in which these elements can be developed and relaunched today. This conference, therefore, has no set themes or sub-themes for reflection; instead, it makes room for the most important themes to emerge from the papers, debate and work of the scholars summoned to Bologna.

In short, the Centro internazionale di Studi umanistici “Umberto Eco” is organising an open work-conference enabling the emergence of new paths of reflection by re-examining and re-filtering Umberto Eco's immense body of works.

The proposals should be structured around six main areas:

1. Narrative
2. Interpreting and Translation
3. Semiotics
4. Philosophy and History of ideas
5. Middle Ages
6. Media

With these areas in mind, those who identify with one or more of Eco's ideas will be able to interact and reflect dialogically with the conference’s community of scholars.

In doing so, not only will the conference redesign a legacy destined to become ever richer and more open; it will also make it possible to commemorate Eco's vast intellectual legacy of thought in a non-ceremonial manner, revealing its strength, renewing its interpretation, and creating an occasion that is not merely commemorative or retrospective, but rich in thought, innovation and future.

Organisational instructions

We invite researchers wishing to participate in the conference to submit their proposal by 30 October 2025.

The proposal should include:

• Name and surname
• Affiliation
• Qualification
• Reference area (among the 6 specified above)
• Abstract (between 2000 and 4000 characters with spaces)
• 5 keywords
• Short biographical note (approx. 1000 characters with spaces)

 The official website of the conference, through which proposals can be submitted, will be available from the end of May 2025.

 The Scientific Committee of the Conference will notify acceptance of the proposal by 30 November 2025.

 The conference languages are Italian and English. Consequently, the proposal should also be drafted in one of these two languages.

 The maximum duration of each speech is 20 minutes.

Enrolment

If the proposal is accepted, its submission requires advance payment of the registration fee.

Registration fees

• Early rate: EUR 180.00 (until 10 January 2025)
• Standard rate: EUR 300.00 (from 10 January 2026 to the end of the conference)
• PhD students: EUR 90.00.

Registration includes access to all keynote lectures and all convention and social events organised as part of the conference.
