Marco Albertini

Marco Albertini

Professor in Sociology, he received his Ph.D. from the European University Institute. He has been Research Assistant at the EUI, Visiting Professor at Pompeu Fabra University and Junior Researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences of the Juan March Institute. He has been Visiting Scholar and Sunstrat Guest Researcher at the Swedish Institute for Social Research; he has been visiting scholar at the Aging Studies Institute (Syracuse University, NY, USA); he is member of the Programme Committee of the Ph.D. program in Sociology of the University of Trento, in 2014 he has been Short Term Consultant to the World Bank for the Regional Aging Report in Europe and Central Asia.

His research interests focus on intergenerational relations; the consequences of separation and divorce; the comparative study of income inequality and social stratification; the consequences of childlessness; long-term care policies and ageing.

Nicola Barban

Nicola Barban

Nicola is a Professor in Demography at the University of Bologna (Italy) and an international co-investigator of the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC). He is the Principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator Grant GENPOP: Genes, genealogies and the evolution of demographic change and social inequality.  His research focuses on demography, sociogenomics, social interactions, and life course analysis. His work has been published in high impact factors journals such as Nature Genetics, Nature Human Behaviour and American Sociological Review. He is the author, together with Melinda Mills and Felix Tropf, of the textbook An introduction to Statistical Genetic Analysis edited by MIT Press. 

Chiara Binelli

Chiara Binelli

Chiara Binelli received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University College London. She is Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna and Founder and Co-Director of the Center for Research and Social Progress (cersp.org). Her early research focused on returns to schooling, quality of education, informal labor markets, social inequality, employment and earnings’ expectations. More recently, she has been working on using data science to address policy-relevant questions such as climate change. She has published in several international journals such as the Review of Economic Dynamics, Social Indicators ResearchEconomics of Education Review, and World Development.

Gabriele D'Angelo

Gabriele D'Angelo

Gabriele D'Angelo is an Assistant Professor (tenured) at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Bologna. He has been visiting researcher at the Université Paris Diderot, Laboratoire Preuves, Programmes et Systèmes (Paris, France) and at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS) (Singapore). His research interests include parallel and distributed simulation, distributed systems, online games and computer security. He is the author of several publications on these topics. Since 2011, he is in the editorial board (area editor) of the Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory (SIMPAT) journal published by Elsevier. In the years he has taught many graduate and undergraduate courses on computer and network security,  cyber security, computer networks, simulation, algorithms and data structures.

Elena Esposito

Elena Esposito

Elena Esposito is Professor of Sociology at the University Bielefeld and the University of Bologna. She has published extensively on the theory of society, media theory, memory theory and the sociology of financial markets. Her current research on algorithmic prediction is supported by a five-year Advanced Grant from the European Research Council. Her latest book is Artificial Communication: How Algorithms Produce Social Intelligence, MIT Press, 2022.

Giampiero Giacomello

Giampiero Giacomello

Giampiero Giacomello is an Associate Professor of Political Science with the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Bologna, Italy, where he teaches cybersecurity and strategic studies and heads the Departmental Center for Computational Social Science. Previously he held research and teaching positions (visiting) at several American and European universities. His research interests include cybersecurity, social computing and simulation methods. He has authored and co-edited thirteen volumes and published several articles in Safety Science, Defense Economics, International Spectator, European Political Science, International Studies Review, European Security, International Political Science Review and others. Dr. Giacomello has long been associated with ISODARCO (International School on Disarmament and Research on Conflicts) part of the Pugwash group.

Luigi Martino

Luigi Martino

Luigi Martino (PhD) is Assistant Professor at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna, he obtained a PhD at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa with a research project on "Improve cyber security for critical infrastructures in Italy: the public-private partnership model against cyber attacks ". He is professor of ICT Policies and Cyber Security at the University of Florence. His research interests include, inter alia, cyber security, security studies, cyber diplomacy, the usage of power in cyberspace, theories of International Relations and the dynamics of cyberspace in the international system.

Elena Morotti

Elena Morotti

Elena Morotti is an adjunct professor at the University of Bologna since 2018. She received her PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Padova in 2018 and she was a research fellow at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Bologna. Her researches mainly concern the implementation and application of algorithms for medical image restoration and reconstruction, based on regularized inverse problem formulations with variational tools or neural networks. In 2018-2020, she also developed projects with Virtual Reality technologies.

Luca Pinto is an assistant professor (tenure track) in Political Science at the University of Bologna. He completed his PhD and his undergraduate studies at the University of Milan. His research interests include party competition, governments and legislative studies, with particular attention to methodological aspects of political research. He has published on these topics several contributions in books and international journals. 

Elena Loli Piccolomini

Elena Loli Piccolomini

 

Elena Loli Piccolomini (ELP) received the degree in Mathematics at the Bologna University in 1988. She was a researcher at the Bologna University in Numerical Analysis from 1991 to 2006. She is Associate Professor of Numerical Analysis at the same University since 2006and she has habilitation to Ordinary Professor since 2018. She is member of the OASIS group (http://www.oasis.unimore.it/site/home.html). Her research is mainly focused on Numerical Optimization methods applied to the main imaging applications (especially in the medical area) such as denoise, deblur, superresolution, reconstruction from projections. Recently she is also using the modern deep learning techniques, eventually combined with the traditional mathematical models.

Oltion Preka

Oltion Preka is Adjunct Professor in Big Data for the Social Sciences at the University of Bologna. He has been Research Associate at the UCD - University College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland), and has completed his PhD at the University of Bologna. He has been Consultant to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for various projects for several years. His interests focus on applying the most advanced techniques of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) (Natural Language Processing (NLP) in general and text analytics in particular) in the social sciences.

Michele Sapignoli

Michele Sapignoli is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna (Italy). He earned a doctorate in Social and Political Science Methodology at the Sapienza University in Rome. His fields of interest include survey methodology, legal studies and judicial systems. He teaches or has taught courses in Research Methodology; Social Research Statistics; Judicial Behaviour and Judicial Organization; Italian Politics; Comparative Judicial Systems; and Justice, Politics and Society.

Laura Sartori

Laura Sartori is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Research from the University of Trento (2002) and ever since worked on several topics related to the social and political implications of technology: from ICTs to AI. Current projects are about 1. Reproduction of inequalities (gender and race biases) and public perception of Artificial Intelligence, 2. Money and Complementary currencies.

 

Ettore Scappini

Ettore Scappini

Ettore Scappini (PhD), is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the Department of education studies at the University of Bologna (Italy). His primary research interests are in the field of methodological problems in social science research, and more specifically the following topics: measurement errors in social surveys with the use of indicators derived from stylized items and diary data; development of calibration models in surveys that jointly use diaries and stylized items; the validity of indicators measuring religious practice; and the problems associated with estimated APC models used in research on political behavior.

Gian Piero Siroli

Gian Piero Siroli

Gian Piero Siroli is a sub-nuclear physicist, member of the Physics and Astronomy Departement, works in the field of computing and networking in the context of High Energy Physics experiments, he also participated in the initial development of WWW at CERN in Geneva. His past teaching activities include a course on "Information Technologies and International Security" at University of Pisa (1999-2008) and more recently a course on “Computer and Network Security” at the University of Bologna, where he is currently teaching “Cybersecurity and Cybercrime”, including aspects of cyberwarfare. GPS develops most of his research activities at CERN; at the moment he is involved in the computer security domain and holds the role of Computer Security Officer of the large international collaboration CMS at the LHC collider at CERN. GPS is also a project coordinator of the activities on cyber security and warfare of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, an international organization awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.

Aidar Zinnatullin

Aidar Zinnatullin

Aidar Zinnatullin is a PhD student in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna. He studies how political discussions evolve in the context of authoritarian politics. In the research project, Aidar uses quantitative text analysis techniques and causal inference identification strategies.
