ARCES supports two PhD programmes: ETIT(Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology Engineering) and EIT4SEMM (Engineering and Information Technology for Structural and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management).
The international PhD program in "Engineering and Information Technology for Structural and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management - EIT4SEMM" is designed for outstanding students targeting academic or corporate interdisciplinary research, at top level labs or protection and safety institutions.
This program provides methodological and technological skills aimed at monitoring structures, infrastructures and the environment, and assess, mitigate and manage natural and human induced risks. This course is a response to the increasing demand from the society and from the scientific and professional communities for innovative approaches and new skills to ensure environmental safety, with particular reference to the European context. Relevant examples are (a) health monitoring of civil and industrial structures and infrastructures, (b) performance monitoring of networks (gas, water, electric, telephone, road, rail, etc.), (c) monitoring and managing air and hydrogeological systems. These activities can benefit from the convergence of emerging methods and technologies addressed by this new PhD program.
PhD students in EIT4SEMM gain specific expertise in models, algorithms, components, architectures and operating principles of the sensing technologies and build up a unique background in infrastructures and environment management and related European regulations.
EIT4SEMM focus areas are:
1) Modeling and Analysis (Focus Area 1)
2) Sensing Technology (Focus Area 2)
3) Data Integration/Interrogation (Focus Area 3)
Each proposal should be linked to an application domain.
The ET-IT PhD Programme is developed by the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI) of the University of Bologna, Italy. It is a joint PhD course with the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, an institute devoted to high quality research based in Trento, Italy.
The main research areas of ETIT are:
Electronics
Study of devices, circuits and electronic systems, with specific emphasis on microelectronics, micro-and nano-technologies, intelligent sensors, electronics for telecommunications, electronics, digital systems, electronic systems for implementation and monitoring, modern computing systems, both software and hardware.
Electromagnetic fields
Research activities related to microwaves and optical systems, antennas and propagation, and the theory of Electromagnetics fields applied to electronics and telecommunications systems and devices.
Telecommunications
Study of systems and networks, and associated components and devices. In this context, the Ph.D. program addresses issues related to the architectures of telecommunications systems and networks (wireless, cellular, fixed/mobile terrestrial/ satellite, wired and optical networks) as well as information technology such as multimedia applications and services, smart cities, smart grids, ...
