Course programme

Asynchronous online teaching of reading a scientific paper (3 hours):

  • Differences between papers and textbooks.
  • Role of each section and what kind of information it contains.
  • Where authors usually “hide” important details.
  • What sections you should ignore on the first pass.
  • Setting realistic goals (you don’t need to understand everything).
  • Recognising breakthrough innovation.


Synchronous online teaching of writing a scientific paper (4 hours):

  • The purpose of writing a scientific paper: communication, reproducibility, and credit.
  • Reader-centered writing mindset.
  • The “story” behind every research paper.
  • The importance of coherence between sections.
  • How reviewers evaluate each section.
  • Conventional IMRaD architecture (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion).
  • Journal-specific requirements and trends (e.g., structured abstracts, graphical abstracts, highlight sections).
  • Common pitfalls in scientific communication.


Synchronous online teaching of writing a scientific paper: let’s write a successful contribution (2 hours):

Students are divided in groups and work together to writing the skeleton of a scientific paper in the form of a short communication.
Reference will be made to real journal templates.
The exercise will include about 6 hours of homework.
Results will be presented in a group discussion.
