  • Romee Majores

"Romei", according to Dante Alighieri, are those pilgrims walking towards Rome, which is an ancient and actual destination of many European routes of pilgrimage. Most of these minor and major routes are now forgotten or marginalized but they took part of the thick European network of religious routes towards the capital of Christianity, the city of St.Paul and St.Peter. Rome is also the city of Jubilee and it was a stage of pilgrimage towards the Holy land.

"Romee" is the adjective used to identify these ancient routes while "majores" was recently added, getting inspiration from the three "peregrinationes majores". The latter are pilgrimage routes towards Jerusalm, Rome and Santiago de Compostela. Similarly, the "Romee majores" are made up by three routes represented by three entities: the "European Association of Vie Francigene" (recognized by the European Council in 1994), the "Via Romea Germanica" (recognized in 2020) and the "Romea Strata European Association" which recognition is ongoing. These three routes constituted officially a network on 19th May 2021.

The official recognition of the "Romee majores" revives the thousand-year cultural and geopolitical common identity that spread from Spain to the Urals unitl XIXth century. Romei had a significant role in the consolidation of the European identity since the fall of the West Roman Empire (476) and during th eMiddle Age, untile modern changes that saw the weakening of routes.

Thanks to this network, Rome can recover this ancient spiritual identity, reinforcing its 17-centuries-old tradition in the field.
