A year ago, the International Center for Humanistic Studies "Umberto Eco" of the University of Bologna and the School of Humanities of Tallinn University signed a bilateral agreement on academic cooperation.

On that occasion, the two institutions launched a series of joint workshops in semiotics. The inaugural workshop was held in Bologna in June 2022 and focused on semiotic and digital approaches to memory and heritage. The second workshop will be held at Tallinn University on September 29: you can find the program here and abstracts and participant bios here.

Professors, PhD students and scholars from Bologna, Tallinn and Tartu Universities will explore the potential of semiotic concepts and methods in analyzing the conflicts that characterize our societies, which are often grounded in symbolic and cultural issues.

Participants will introduce theoretical frameworks for studying conflict, along with a series of case studies ranging from the ecological crisis to erasure culture and conspiracy narratives.

The workshop is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
