Public Speaking for Research

Course unit for PhD students

Aim

Public speaking is not an innate gift, but a skill that can be developed and “trained.” This workshop on Public Speaking aims to provide basic tools to help PhD students effectively present their research: through group interactions, exercises, and analysis of real situations, participants will have the opportunity to understand all the key elements behind an effective

public presentation. The workshop will begin with the analysis of context (different types of audiences, the objective of the presentation, the format in which it is included, spaces and logistics), move on to the content of the presentation (speech structure and the effectiveness of supporting materials), and finally address performance and the management of challenges.

Learning objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will have improved:

their knowledge of fundamental public speaking techniques

their relational skills

their ability to organize and plan their presentation, taking into account the context and defining goals and methods according to the format and type of audience.
