PhD Media & Information Literacy Workshop

Course unit for PhD students

Aim

The workshop aims to provide the skills necessary to be aware and autonomous in information management, also exploring the opportunities offered by generative artificial intelligence. The goal is to provide practical guidance on the resources, services, and tools made available by the University to improve research and documentation. The focus will be on developing critical and autonomous skills to navigate the ever-changing information landscape.

 Learning objectives

At the end of the training activity, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical analysis skills of the information researched, collected, selected, and organized using the specific tools and methods learned.
  • Critically evaluate the credibility, accuracy, objectivity, and ethical implications of information sources.
  • Manage research information using reference software, platforms, and institutional services.
  • Interact with research information in an ethical and responsible manner, in compliance with copyright laws.

 

Workshop Syllabus

The workshop consists of four sessions; each session lasts 2.5 hours and covers a different training module with the following content: 

  1. Strategies, services, and tools for planning documentary research and undertaking literature reviews.
  2. Critical evaluation and ethical and responsible management of information: lateral reading and genAI.
  3. Overview of citation databases (OpenAlex, Scopus, Web of Science), bibliometric indicators, and evaluation criteria; personal identity management (ORCID).
  4. Management of bibliographic references using software for the creation and management of bibliographies (Zotero).
