Senior Seminar organized by Prof. Eva Schlotheuber (Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf), visiting professor at MemoryLab.
In the 14th century, the conflicts between the emperor and the pope reached an unprecedented climax. The protracted disputes had led to a serious constitutional crisis in the Roman-Germanic Empire, and the fierce struggle for power had meant that no one knew any longer what rights the emperor and pope had in Italy. The intention of this chronicle was to get to the bottom of these questions, tracing a history of the relationship between the emperor and the pope from the very beginning. The chronicle, still awaiting an edition, surviving in two manuscripts and one fragment, traces the battles that led to endless feuds and proxy wars in Rome and northern Italy. The Chronicon Quadripartitum or Chronicon Treverense deals with the history of the emperor and the pope, the archbishops of Trier and the nota digna (‘important events’) by placing them in a four-column concordance, being - as the manuscripts show - used for many decades and repeatedly annotated. In the course of four seminars, the concept of the chronicle will be discussed, the manuscript and marginalia will be read and interpreted, and the originals will be identified, offering a mirror to discuss the policies of ‘memory production’ implemented in the 14th century.
