Second meeting of the senior seminar “An intricate history: the Chronicon quadripartitum”, held by Prof. Eva Schlotheuber (Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf) and visiting professor at MemoryLab.

Through the study of the political, cultural and legal context that underpinned and motivated the production of the Chronicon, the seminar will focus on the way writing and foremost reflecting history (i.e. constructing and transmitting an organized and codified memory of the past) was seen as a crucial factor in shaping the relationship of the pope and the emperor over centuries. Especially the Bolognese legal experts shaped with their analyses and opinions the perception of the relationship which developed over the centuries. Some of their key points were taken up in paragraphs not depending on templates and others were left out which makes the chronicle to a most interesting example for the reflection and formation of power relationships on the basis of history.
