Operational Unit 1 – Automation, Robotics and Mechatronics

  • Motion measurement of machines, robots, and operators using optical and inertial systems.

  • Electro-thermal characterization and ageing tests of lithium-ion cells, modules, and battery packs.

  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing of electrical and electronic devices.

  • Characterization and testing of mechanisms, machines, and electric drives; power and signal electronics; control and automation systems.

 

Operational Unit 2 – Advanced Materials and Applications for Marine Engineering

 

Operational Unit 3 – Advanced Materials for Design and Photonic Applications

  • Mechanical characterization tests of metallic materials: hardness testing, tensile testing, impact/resilience testing, and tribological testing.

  • Static and dynamic testing for the validation of machine components and assemblies, including the design of dedicated test rigs. Experimental stress analysis.

  • Static, fatigue, thermal/hygroscopic, and impact characterization tests of joining systems (adhesives, bolts, hybrid systems).

 

Operational Unit 4 – Structured and/or Composite Materials for Advanced Applications

  • Characterization of flame behaviour of materials through cone calorimetry measurements.

  • Thermomechanical characterization of polymeric and/or composite materials through DSC (definition of thermal transitions such as Tg, Tm, Tc, reaction enthalpy, etc.), TGA (thermal stability and evaluation of inorganic fillers), and DMA (storage and loss modulus as a function of temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion, HDT).

  • Structural characterization (FT-IR, UV spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering) and functional characterization (potentiometric measurements; measurement of interstitial or capillary water pressure through a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer) of polymeric, composite, and/or functional materials.

  • Development of new products or materials with specific and tunable functionalities, also through innovative techniques (e.g., microwave reactors, electrospinning techniques).

 

Operational Unit 5 – Virtual Prototyping and Experimental Modelling of Mechanical Systems

  • Vibration measurement and signal analysis for the modelling of mechanical systems and for machine monitoring and diagnostics.

  • Measurement of elastic properties of materials and mechanical spectroscopy; measurement of gas–solid reactions.

  • Dynamic characterization of coatings and advanced materials.

 

Operational Unit 6 – Chemistry and Toxicology of Materials

  • Characterization of the chemical composition and in vitro activity of agro-industrial by-products and plant extracts for applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and nutraceutical fields.

  • Quality control and stability testing of medicines, food supplements, cosmetics, and other health-related products.

  • Analysis of heterogeneous matrices using advanced analytical techniques: separation techniques such as liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and capillary electrophoresis (CE); spectroscopic techniques (UV); mass spectrometry (MS) and coupled techniques (LC-MS, GC-MS).

  • Development of new cosmetic and nutraceutical products and related stability studies.
