The Centre was officially inaugurated in April 2017, inheriting the legacy of the former Advanced School for the Humanities, founded by Umberto Eco.

The first director of the Centre was Patrizia Violi.

The Centre's primary purpose is to promote research, study, documentation, dissemination, and in-depth exploration—both nationally and internationally—on themes related to the work and intellectual interests of Umberto Eco.

Moreover, in continuity with its past, the Centre also pursues the broader aim of promoting and hosting advanced scholarly initiatives in education and research across all fields of the humanities.

Within this framework, it organizes national and international conferences and seminars, as well as high-level educational activities, including doctoral programmes, postgraduate courses, and specialist training.

The Centre operates as a division of the University Library of Bologna - BUB.
