This cluster studies the transnational development, diffusion, and governance of emerging technologies such as digital finance and artificial intelligence. Our research examines how these technologies are created, deployed, and regulated in different contexts, and assesses their political, economic, and social impacts. A critical focus is the ambivalence of these technologies: while they can exacerbate problems such as corruption, they also have the potential to promote transparency and inclusion. Drawing on political science, sociology, and law, the projects here analyze the complexities of governing emerging technologies in an interconnected world from the perspectives of political science, sociology, and law.
