Digital finance is the transformation of ‘traditional’ finance through the use of digital technologies. It is a complex sphere, which includes five main components: (i) Bigtech finance; (ii) central bank digital currencies; (iii and iv) crypto currencies and assets; and (v) the use of A.I. in finance. Finance is a major economic sector (nationally and globally), which is inherently transnational and has the potential to generate transboundary crises. The governance of digital finance involves important distributional issues: it generates winners and losers across and within countries. It has also implications for competition policy, data protection, cyber security and geopolitics. This project examines all these issues at the international level as well as in specific jurisdictions.
