MiReIL investigates the complex interplay between religion and migration from a international law perspective in today’s globalized world, where religion has resurfaced as a key identifier. Other than the migration-religion issues raised in the field of asylum, it pays attention to the impact of religious groups with a migratory background in countries of destination where problems of non-discrimination and social integration of migrants of all faiths have increasingly emerged.
In this context, balancing state sovereignty in religious regulation with individual rights, particularly in Europe and the European Union, continues to challenge policymakers, especially with regard to the transnational legal issues that a multi-religious society entails, including the issue of transnational religious-motivated terrorism. With its four research streams – religion in country of origin, religion as a basis for asylum, freedom of religion in countries of destinations and integration through non-discrimination on religious grounds – MiReIL aims to advance new - human rights-oriented - solutions to these challenges.
The research projects MiReIL was funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and the European Union (EU) under the Call PRIN 2022 (Next Generation EU) for the years 2023-2025.
