Project description

Over the past two decades, several transnational forces have reshaped the global political system and its hierarchy, including economic and financial crises, security and technological competition among major powers, and decarbonization imperatives. The purpose of this project is to investigate how the European Union is coping with these transnational forces and with what consequences for the process of European integration and Europe’s role in world politics. In doing so, the project focuses on two key policy areas: security and defense and economic and financial policy. In particular, the project traces the evolution of the two policy areas over time, investigates their transformation as a result of the major transnational forces of the past two decades, and examines the growing and changing interaction between the two sets of policies.
