Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystem Numerical Modelling (SINCEM)

SiNCEM research activities focus on the development of numerical models for the understanding and the forecasting of the ocean general circulation from the short to the climatic time scales for the physical and biogeochemical components of the marine ecosystem.

SiNCEM main research themes are:

  • Multidisciplinary oceanographic data time series analysis for the open ocean and the costal areas.
  • Atmospheric time series and air-sea interaction processes
  • Numerical Modelling of the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea circulation from the open ocean to the coastal scales.
  • Numerical Modelling of the ecosystem dynamics of the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea.
  • Numerical modelling of transport and fate of pollutants in the sea.
  • Rilocatable Numerical Modelling for the SSA (Situational Sea Awareness) and REA (Rapid Environmental Assessment).

SiNCEM co-operates closely with the Bologna section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV), in particular with the Operational Oceanography National Group for the development of ocean forecasting in the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea.

At the international level Prof. Pinardi is the Co-President of the Joint Committee for Oceanography and Meteorology and she has associate research positions with INGV, the Centro EuroMediterraneao sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) and the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Bologna section. She is also Member of the Steering Board of MyOcean that provides the first operational oceanographic service at european level. Prof. Pinardi is responsible for different projects at the different Institutes: TESSA , ADRICOSM-Intermediate, NextData among others.

Prof. Zavatarelli coordinates the activities of PERSEUS and the activities of TESSA project for the development of the ecosystem numerical modelling of the Adriatic Sea and of Relocatable Models. Prof. Zavatarelli is also the Chief Scientist of the Development Team in the Biochemical Flux Model (BFM) Consortia.
