The research center was established with the intention of fostering and developing the study of the various philosophical and scientific expressions that characterized the Mediterranean world between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Greek expression "metabolai" (transformations) is meant to describe what is the historical and/or geographical trait that best characterizes these fruitful centuries of the history of thought. Classical antiquity, the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Persian, Arabic and Latin worlds were in close contact in the philosophical and scientific spheres, giving rise to a virtuous exchange that indelibly marked the world in which we live. Philosophers, scientists and translators traveled between Athens, Rome and Alexandria, between Byzantium, Baghdad and Cordova, defining ever-changing textual, cultural and intellectual paths.
