Museums and difficult memories: how to exhibit the past?

Second session of the seminar series 'Material Aspects of Memory: Cultural Heritage and Difficult Legacies in Contemporary European History' by Dr. Beatrice Falcucci, visiting professor at Memory Lab.

  • Date: 18 NOVEMBER 2025  from 17:00 to 18:45

  • Event location: Aula Specola, Department of History and Cultures, Piazza San Giovanni in Monte 2

  • Type: Cluster 3 - Material Memories

The seminar will discuss exhibition strategies for addressing memories of totalitarianism and imperialism in museums, engaging students in a hands-on critical analysis of exhibitions and collections in Europe, analysing reinterpretation and transformation strategies of sites and monuments associated with regimes, slavery and colonialism.

Case studies of toponymy, urban planning, and monuments related to the fascist dictatorships of Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Italy will be analysed. Monuments related to the slave trade and colonialism in France and Great Britain will be recalled, followed by a focus on the museums of Belgium and the Netherlands as case studies for the reorganization of sections or entire collections dedicated to the empire, and their attempt to offer a decolonial view of the past.
