Recognition of Language Proficiency

1. Purpose

This document details the conditions and procedures for the recognition of language proficiency qualifications for the purpose of awarding the corresponding credits (ECTS) in the student’s academic record at the University of Bologna.

 

2. Eligible Qualifications for Recognition

The following qualifications are eligible for recognition, provided that they correspond to a level equal to or higher than that required by the relevant degree programme:

 

2.1 Language Certifications Recognized by AICLU

Language certifications included among those recognized by the Italian Association of University Language Centers (AICLU), as specified in the table annexed to the AICLU Guidelines on Language Certifications.

 

2.2 CLA Course Certificates

Certificates of successful completion of 50-hour courses offered by the University Language Centre (CLA), including courses delivered at the Bologna and Romagna campuses. Such certificates must attest to a proficiency level equal to or higher than that required for the relevant language proficiency requirement

 

2.3 International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate Diploma, provided that the curriculum includes English A (English Literature / English Language and Literature) and/or English B (English Language), in accordance with the CEFR equivalence table established by UK NARIC.

 

2.4 Liceo Galvani International Sections

The secondary school diploma awarded by Liceo Galvani (Bologna), International Sections, pursuant to the specific agreement in force for the recognition of examinations and diplomas issued by the German-option international sections (Deutsch-Profil-Schulen)

 

2.5 Diplôme du Baccalauréat (ESABAC Project)

 

2.6 Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD)

The Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD), provided that certification is complete in all four language skills.

2.7 IELTS
IELTS Academic, General Training, and UKVI, in accordance with the levels specified in the
AICLU table.
2.8 Trinity College London
Trinity ISE Foundation (A2) and Trinity ISE IV (C2).
2.9 Cambridge English Language Assessment
  • PET (all levels)
  • FCE (all levels)
  • CAE (all levels)
  • CPE (all levels)

 

2.10 Pearson PTE Academic

From a minimum Global Scale of English (GSE) score of 43.

 

2.11 British Council

Aptis ESOL General (C1)

 

3 Exclusions

Students may not submit requests to the CLA for the recognition of equivalency concerning:

  • “Language proficiency certificates” issued internally
  • level certifications” relating to Erasmus or Overseas mobility tests.

4. Validity of Qualifications

Language certifications must:

  • Have been obtained no more than five (5) years prior to the date of submission to the Universitiy Of Bologna;
  • Certify proficiency in all four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

 

For the purposes of calculating the five-year validity period, the date of examination (Date of Examination) indicated on the certification shall be considered authoritative.

 

5. Equivalency Procedure

Students in possession of an eligible language certification may request recognition for the purpose of obtaining the CFU (ECTS credits) provided for language proficiency requirements in their study plan.

 

6. Submission and Evaluation of Applications

Applications for recognition must:

Be submitted exclusively through the Studenti Online portal, using the function

“Language Proficiency Recognition”;


Be submitted within the deadlines established by the relevant degree programme;

Include the final and official language certification. Applications accompanied solely by a statement of results shall not be evaluated

 

Recognition is subject to:

  • Verification of the eligibility of the submitted certification;
  • Verification of its authenticity, including random checks where deemed appropriate.

 

In the event of a positive outcome, the recognized language proficiency shall be recorded automatically in the student’s academic record.

 

7. Other Types of Recognition

The following cases fall outside the present equivalency procedure and are subject to separate procedures:

Language proficiency examinations previously taken at the University of Bologna or at other universities (see the relevant credit recognition procedures);

Language assessment tests taken in connection with international mobility programmes (see the relevant mobility call for applications).

The above
-mentioned procedures are not administered by the University Language Centre (CLA).
