Italian Language for international students

The Language Center of the University of Bologna offers tutored online Italian courses to international students who are absolute beginners in the Italian language and who are enrolled in degree programs that are taught in English and have a set Italian language requirement.

To know whether your degree program includes an Italian language course in your study plan as a compulsory component, please go to the “Course Structure Diagram” section of your degree program web page.

If you are an absolute beginner

If you are an absolute beginner you are required to register for an “Italian language for international students” course tutored by the Language Center. Registration for the course is free of charge.

The course is offered online in blended mode with 52 hours of self-study and 26 hours of online meetings with a tutor (once a week for 13 weeks). The course is offered for CEFR levels A1 and absolute beginners.

If you attend the course for at least 70% of the overall duration (attendance will be recorded) and you take the final test, at the end of the course you will be awarded a “pass” in the “Italian language for international students” course on your study plan.

N.B.: This Italian language course does not meet the Italian requirement for non-EU students residing abroad, required for enrolment in degree programs.

This course is a separate tutored version of the ICoN online self-study Italian courses (which are aimed at the larger community of the University of Bologna) and is reserved for the students enrolled in specific degree programs that are taught in English.

Registration

To participate, you must register through StudentiOnline (SOL Bookings).

Registration is possible as long as your matriculation procedure has been successfully completed.

A few days before the course starts, you will receive an email from your tutor with instructions to join the first online meeting on TEAMS.
You can only register for one course.

Calendar

Registration for the next classes opens on October 10th at 1.00 pm and closes on October 26th at 1.00 pm.

See meetings timetable.

If you are not an absolute beginner

If you are not an absolute beginner and have previous knowledge of the Italian language, you have two options:

  1. If you are already in possession of an Italian language certification you can submit a recognition request through Studenti Online by clicking on the box “Language Exam recognition”. The table Italian language certificates (see below) provides a list of valid language certificates;
  2. If you have previous knowledge of the Italian language which is equivalent or superior to CEFR level A1 but cannot certify it officially, you can fulfil the Italian language requirement by enrolling in one of the in-class courses (A2-C1) offered by the University Language Center. Registration for the first course is free of charge. For an overview of the courses on offer and of the deadlines to enrol, please visit the webpage Italian for international learners.
