Blame, Responsibility, and Agency: A Meditation on Possible Moral Statuses for AI Entities - Marcello Guarini (Windsor University)

  • Date: 15 JUNE 2026  from 14:00 to 16:00

  • Event location: Sala Apollo, Via Zamboni 38 - In presence and online event

  • Type: K&C Seminar Series

The idea of an artificially intelligent deliberative agent (d-agent) is presented. It is argued that such an agent, even if is nonculpable and not phenomenally conscious, could be said to have both a kind of moral agency and patienthood. The claim is not that any existing system has met the requirements for such status; rather, it is that it is not hard to imagine producing a system that could meet the requirements. The idea of a space of agencies is presented to capture some of the respects in which we might be both similar to and different from the kind of AI d-agent being imagined.
