The research group on Animal and Environmental Physiology studies the effects of environmental stressors on acquatic invertebrates and vertebrates

The research on Animal and Environmental Physiology is carried out in the Ravenna Campus and in collaboration with the Bologna Campus. The main objective is to understand the mechanisms involved in neuro-endocrine responses to environmental stresses, in particular about the interference of environmental stresses on the integrated control system of cellular functions and gene expression in aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates. The interest is also on the effects of pollutants on cell functions, especially for molecules now widespread and persistent in the environment which are often "designed" to have biological effects, such as endocrine disruptors and residues of drugs.
The reactions to stressors are studied at the molecular and cellular level (gene and protein expression, signal transduction mechanisms, enzymatic activities, etc.) with appropriate methods (RT-qPCR, Western blotting, spectrofluorimetry, etc.). The models are fish and aquatic molluscs and cultured cells.
The group also carries out applied research regarding the evaluation of biochemical, physiological and cytological responses (biomarkers) for the evaluation of the health status of molluscs and fishes.
In collaboration with the Bologna physiology laboratory we are studying the adaptation of sea water eels in the phase of transformation by yellow eels to Argentine eels, applying hormonal effects assessments (Ravenna) and proteomic analysis (Bologna, Dr. Enzo Spisni).
